How to scrap my car legally

Scraping your car causes many people to hesitate, but the process is easier than you think. In this article, you'll find out 'how do I scrap my car legally?' and more.

Scrapping your car is a hassle, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s important that you’re aware of how to scrap your car legally before you go ahead and do it.

Scrap or Junk a vehicle is an important decision and requires you to consider all the legal, environmental and physical implications. This process can be daunting as there are many factors to consider when scrapping a vehicle. Having done this for a number of years we will guide you through the legal process.

To ensure that your car is quickly recycled, it’s important to take action as soon as possible. The process can take a matter of days, or up to a few weeks, so you don’t want to leave it any longer than you have to.

There are three ways to scrap your car legally. The first is to go to the DVLA website and use their online service. This costs £8 for a basic V5C document. If you want a CoD then that is an extra £4. You can also go through a dealer such as CarSales, where the process will cost more because of the middleman, but you’ll have to pay any VAT in advance and wait longer for the documents. Or, you could simply use an ATF company who will take care of all the paperwork and even tow away your car for free.

The best place to begin is to speak to a local scrap business. They will be able to tell you what they can buy at present and how much it will cost as well as getting any unwanted parts off your hands.

    What happens next?

Be sure to remember that you can claim back any unused car tax, and you’ll also want to inform your insurance company straight away to cancel your policy, or get a quote for any new vehicle you might be purchasing to replace the old one.

Finally, make sure there are no CDs in the player or items in the glove compartment, and take a good look around the boot before you hand over the keys and documents.
